My Little Kelpie by Sarina Dorie

Encountering a kelpie on the way to school one day changes the course of 13 year old Bridget’s life.

Bridget is walking home from school with her pre-school aged sister, Amy, when a blue horse with a seaweed mane starts talking to her. Turns out Bridget is the only child over the age of four who can hear the talking horse, which starts her on a journey of discovery into her origins.

This is a fun urban fantasy short story. Bridget is a likable protagonist, the kelpie is humorous, and the description of fairyland is interesting.

I won’t go into too much detail for fear of giving the story away, but if you are a fan of Celtic folklore, you will recognize the stories referenced here, and I’m sure you’ll enjoy the creative spin placed on them.

The length of the story is perfectly satisfactory, however I’m sure the author could have expanded on the characters and the action to flesh it out into a novella or short novel if she so wished.

If you are looking for a light hearted fantasy story, this is a pleasant diversion for 20 minutes or so.

I award My Little Kelpie
