February is all about promoting female horror writers, so let’s kick off the month with this zombie novel by A M Semple.
When Wilson gets the phone call from Russel he knows it has finally happened – it’s the end of the world. However, as he tries to escape the hordes of undead in the city to get to his friend’s remote camp, Wilson’s kind heart means he can’t say no to the survivors he meets along the way. If they manage to reach Russel’s place, will the survivalist let them in?
There was so much I loved about this book. The zombies have some interesting aspects that make them different, the characters are unusual and the set up is compelling.
Unfortunately, there are downsides to the narrative, especially in the middle of the book, which detracted from the positives. The characters conveniently pair up as soon as they meet, the male characters spend too much time telling the poor little female characters that they are there to protect them and not to look at the nasty zombies, and new characters are ecstatic to see someone after spending a few hours alone.
The writing style is spare and fast paced, which is fine, but I would have enjoyed a few long sentences or more plush descriptions slipped in here or there to give me a breather.
Overall, the good parts of the novel, especially at the beginning and the end, won me over and I award Situation Z…

Situation Z is available for $3.29 ebook and $8.99 print book on Amazon.
I know what you mean about needing varied sentence length. (And I’ve been guilty of it!) It just SOUNDS better in your head when you read sentences with variety. Good review.:-)
