Dead Meat Day 8 by Nick Clausen

It’s the penultimate book in the series, and that fact fills me with both excitement and dread. I don’t want it to end, but I applaud Clausen for bringing the series to a conclusion.

Dan returns to Holger’s house to ask Birgit to end what started a little over a week before. It seems like a simple request, but when did the path of the zombie apocalypse ever run smooth?

This book focuses on all my favorite characters. Dan has been such a stand out from Day 1, and I loved reading about him facing off against Birgit, who is such a wonderful, complex character. It’s also great to see how Dennis has grown over the course of the books. His domineering mother has taken advantage of his intellectual disability to control him, but he’s slowly gained some independence, which I love.

The pacing in this book is spot on, and I couldn’t put it down. It kept me engrossed from beginning to end, and I found it highly enjoyable.

While Day 8 is probably the best book in the series so far, I was left conflicted about a couple of things at the end, which dropped a star from my rating at the last moment.

Both of these issues have to do with Birgit and Dennis. I don’t want to say too much for fear of spoilers, but I will say that the storyline with Birgit went in directions I hadn’t expected, but I trust the author to reveal that not everything is as it seems in Day 9. As for Dennis, I was disappointed by a development that I felt undermined his character.

Despite my problems with these plot points, they make sense within the story world and it was a satisfactory ending, even if not exactly as I wished.

I look forward to Dead Meat Day 9 and the resolution of the story, although I’ll find it hard to say goodbye to these characters.

I award Dead Meat Day 8
