The Witch’s Diary by Rebecca Brae

After some unwise drunken spell casting leaves initiate witch, Hester Digitalis Wishbone, without her magic, she finds herself in a desperate search for a job that can accommodate her unusual position and give her the necessary work experience to qualify as an Adept Witch.

This book was such a joy to read. I loved all the details about the world where Hester lives. Written as her diary entries, her joys and woes are recorded in a realistic way, even if her particular experiences are unique.

I particularly loved Herman, her grumpy cockroach familiar, Missera, Hester’s best friend’s bonnet wearing Asp, and Bob, the building inspector gargoyle.

One of Hester’s job placements saw her working with a wizard and a Druid in a hut upon a wild and windy moor, and it was my favorite part of the book. The tension between the three women provided for hilarious situations, and I loved the visitors who stumbled upon their hut.

I found the time Hester spent on Earth less interesting to read about, because I’m familiar with the location, but I appreciated it was a necessary step in her journey.

A fun, original book with some sweet, heart warming life lessons.

I award The Witch’s Diary

  1. I usually read your reviews without comment but I have to admit, with the characters and their names…Hester Digitalis Wishbone? How much fun is that? It sounds quite clever.
