Poisoned Past by Michael Widebrook was one of my excerpts for BBNYA 2026. It is an emotional story of a father searching for a cure for his dying daughter, set in a world where the characters are all humanoid dolphins, porpoises, and orcas. There are even some shark creatures. When it didn’t make it through to the final of the competition, I had to get a copy to find out what happened next. An exciting and magical story by an author who obviously loves animals.

I was fortunate to get an ARC of this beautiful novella. Adopted is labeled as a cozy horror. While it is gentle on gore, and had lots of heartwarming themes, it is incredibly moving and has a deeply horrific core that will leave you struggling with the outcome. I loved it. Look out for my review coming soon.

I am a fan of E.M. McConnell, and I enjoyed the first book – The Black Cat Bookshop. I am looking forward to returning to the world in the sequel, Beneath What Rome Became.
What are your current, recent, and future reads? Let me know in the comments.
